Raw Leicester Longwool fleece from one of the sheep raised right here on a family farm in Northern Colorado. This fleece has excellent curl definition, beautiful luster, and soft handle, making it very pleasant to spin or use as curly locks for crafting. Our sheep are not coated, so some vegetable matter will be present. This wool has not been washed and is dirty, so you will need to scour it prior to combing or spinning to remove the lanolin and dirt.
This wool is in its natural state (RAW), which means it has been lightly skirted, but not washed or processed in any way. It came straight off of the sheep and still contains lanolin and VM (Vegetable matter- small bits of hay, grass, dirt, etc.) Washing instructions can be included with your purchase on request. Purchasing a small amount of premium fleece rather than an entire fleece is a great way to try out processing wool at home. We do have entire raw fleeces available if you are interested.
We do offer washed Leicester Longwool locks as well if you would like wool that is ready for spinning, dyeing, or crafting.
Our sheep are typically shorn twice per year, so these locks are are between 3 to 5". This shorter clip is lovely to work with for hand spinners, and we recommend combing or flicking and then spinning with a worsted method. Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions about processing this beautiful wool.
Please add a note to your order if you would like us to include a "Shave 'em to Save 'em" sticker. Leicester Longwools have a "threatened" breed status with the Livestock Conservancy, so we thank you for supporting our conservation efforts! We are proud members of the Livestock Conservancy and we also participate in the "Shave 'em to Save 'em" program.
